Chateauneuf-du-Pop!

What a week! First, our H. Goutorbe Cuvee Prestige ($45) was named Best Value in a tasting of grower champagnes in the weekend Wall Street Journal (“Nutty, with brioche and yeast. Big yet well-balanced, flavorful but not heavy. Dottie called this “a wine of conviction.”) Then the 2007 vintage of our favorite Chateauneuf-du-Pape producer, Domaine Monpertuis ($45), won Best of Tasting AND Best Value in yesterday’s New York Times (“Powerfully fruity, yet fresh and taut with persistent mineral flavors.”) Even better, Eric Asimov said the 2006 Monpertuis Chateauneuf-du-Pape ($39), which we also have, was superior to the 2007 to his palate – a lighter, more refined wine. And we were able to pull a champagne coup by getting our hands on 3 cases of the WSJ’s Best of Tasting grower champagne, Roger Coulon ‘Tradition’ ($50) (“the rare Delicious! wine – that is, a wine that is not only tasty but truly exciting . . . this is the kind of wine you could give to or serve to a wine lover and have a friend for life.”)

Needless to say, we are in the mood to celebrate. And we can’t think of a better way to do that than to open some special bottles in a 2-day tasting we’re calling “Chateauneuf-du-Pop.” Join us in the Brooklyn store tonight, Thursday, December 10 starting at 5pm as we taste a vertical (two vintages, same wine) with the 2006 and 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape vintages from Domaine Monpertuis. Then tomorrow, Friday, December 11 starting at 5pm, we’ll pour the “Best Value” H. Goutorbe Cuvee Prestige NV AND the Best of Tasting Roger Coulon ‘Tradition’ NV champagnes. The Manhattan store will be holding the same tastings only on opposite days (Champagne Thursday, Chateauneuf-du-Pape Friday).

We have extremely limited supplies of all of these wines (as of last night we were getting orders from across the country) and we’re only reserving one bottle of each for the tastings. So if you want to make sure you have a bottle for your own special occasion (oh, say, like New Year’s), call the Brooklyn store (718) 797-9463 or the Manhattan store (212) 406-9463 immediately.

All of the wines we are tasting make amazing gifts. We’re able to put together gift-wrapped bottles starting at just $6.50. So join us at the tasting and bring your list. We’ll check it (twice) and find just the perfect wine for all of your giftees.

Remember, every wine over $15 is eligible for a free gift box and we have a free crystal wrap for bottles under $15.
